The Best Barefoot Sandals for Kids Who Run, Climb & Play
Most kids’ sandals are made for summer, not for feet. They look cute and practical, but many still come with stiff soles, narrow fronts, and straps that don’t let little toes move properly.
This guide is all about the best kids barefoot sandals that give little toes room to spread, bend, grip, and move naturally.
Our kids still go barefoot whenever they can, but for hot pavement, playgrounds, holidays, kindergarten, and everyday summer adventures, these are the barefoot sandals we’ve tested on our own kids and kept coming back to.
Update (June 2026): This guide has been completely reorganized into open-toe and closed-toe barefoot sandal sections, with updated fit notes, real-life wear insights, and the brands and models we keep reaching for year after year with our own kids.
What to Check Before Buying Barefoot Sandals for Kids
Barefoot sandals for kids should have a wide, foot-shaped toe box, a flat zero-drop sole, and enough flexibility for natural movement. The sole doesn’t need to be paper-thin for every child, especially in open-toe sandals where very thin soles can sometimes feel too floppy, but it should bend easily and allow the foot to move instead of forcing it into one stiff position.

Sandals usually offer less fixation, especially open-toe styles, so the foot needs to sit securely without sliding forward, twisting, or gripping just to keep the sandal on. At the same time, the straps should never squeeze the toes or sit so far forward that they pull the toes together.
Open-toe sandals can look roomy at first glance, but the real test is how the straps hold the foot while your child walks, runs, and climbs. Closed-toe sandals give more protection for playgrounds, kindergarten, and rougher surfaces, but they can also hide a too-narrow toe box, so always check the actual sole shape and available toe space, not just the size label.
If you’re not sure whether your child needs narrow, medium, wide, or extra-wide sandals, start with our Foot Width Quiz. For more detailed fit tips, check our guide on how barefoot sandals should fit before choosing a size.
Closed-Toe Barefoot Sandals for Kids
Closed-toe barefoot sandals are a great choice when kids need more protection, especially for playgrounds, kindergarten, biking, forest walks, or travel days. We also prefer them for younger kids because the covered front helps protect little toes during active play.
Just make sure you leave enough space in front of the toes, the same as you would with barefoot shoes. A closed-toe sandal should still let the toes spread naturally inside, even if you can’t see them as easily.
Wildling Shoes Feder

Wildling Feder are probably our favorite kids barefoot sandals, and we come back to them every year. They feel like a super-light shoe with lots of airy cut-outs: secure on the foot, easy to adjust for different foot volumes, and great for toddlers because they stay on so well.
We also washed them in the washing machine all the time, which made them very practical for everyday summer use. The only issue we had was with one pair where the Velcro didn’t hold as well anymore after one season.
Fit: Best for narrow and medium-width feet, though some sizes also worked surprisingly well for my extra-wide-footed son. We recommend sizing up one size for the best fit.

Froddo

Froddo has one of the biggest selections of closed-toe barefoot sandals for kids, with tons of colors and leather styles to choose from. They usually come in two main versions: one with a Vibram sole, which is our favorite because it feels lighter and more open, and another with Froddo’s own sole, which feels a bit more structured and shoe-like.
Fit: Best for narrow and medium-width feet with low to average volume. The toe box has a stronger slope toward the pinky toe, so they are not our first choice for kids with squarer toe shapes.
Lang.S Aranya and Lasta

Lang.S is another brand with a big selection of leather barefoot sandals for kids, with plenty of colors and styles to choose from. These were actually my youngest son’s first shoes, and we also used them as slippers because the leather feels soft, comfortable, and nicely made.
They are a lovely option for first walkers and toddlers, especially if you want something simple, flexible, and easy to wear indoors or outside in dry weather.
Fit: Best for narrow and medium-width feet. The smaller sizes feel wider, but they get narrower as the sizes go up.

VIVOBAREFOOT Ultra II

Vivobarefoot Ultra were the first barefoot sandals my older two kids ever wore, and they are a great choice for water, mud, and summer adventures. They can get fully wet, work well as water shoes too, and the material softens with wear.
Fit: Best for medium and wide feet with average to high volume. They are harder to adjust securely on low-volume feet, so slim feet may not get the best lockdown.

Gogsig Mio

Our little tester loved his pair of Gogsig Mio, and they’re a nice option if you want something that feels more like a summer shoe with lots of airy cut-outs than a classic sandal. They do have a more structured feel than some softer barefoot sandals, but the leather held up well for us and they look nicely made.
Fit: Best for medium-width feet with average foot volume. I’d choose them for kids who need a bit more shoe-like coverage in summer, rather than the lightest or most minimal sandal feel.

Feelgrounds Arcade

Feelgrounds Arcade are more closed than some other kids’ sandal styles, but we love how easy they are to wear in real life. They are lightweight, easy to put on, and we washed them in the washing machine without stress, which makes them a very practical summer option for everyday play.
Fit: One of the rare kids’ barefoot sandals that also worked for extra-wide feet, while still being a good option for medium-width feet. Best for low to average foot volume.

Zeazoo Willy, Goby, Marlin and Nemo

Zeazoo is worth checking out if you’re looking for leather barefoot sandals for toddlers and younger kids. Their styles feel similar to Froddo and Lang.S, with plenty of colors to choose from, but they have a very light and flexible feel that works especially well for early walkers.
Fit: Best for narrower feet with average foot volume. They are not the roomiest option for wide or extra-wide feet, but they can be a lovely choice for slim little feet that need a soft, flexible leather sandal.

Magical Shoes

Magical Shoes are super lightweight summer sandals with a thin, nicely flexible sole, so they feel very easy and natural on little feet. They don’t look quite as high-quality as some of the leather sandals on this list, but our little tester had absolutely no complaints about them, and they held up well through the whole summer season.
Fit: A good option if you want a light, flexible barefoot sandal for everyday summer wear. I’d choose them more for casual use than for rougher adventures where you want more structure or toe protection.

Freet Zennor 2 Junior

Freet Zennor are probably the most adventure-ready barefoot sandals for kids on this list. We used them for trails, wet grass, puddles, and summer exploring, and they handled those messy outdoor days really well without feeling bulky on the foot.
They start from size 27, so they are better for older toddlers and kids rather than first walkers. The removable insole adds a bit more cushion, but they still stay nicely light and flexible for active feet.
Fit: Best for medium and wide feet with average foot volume. A great choice if you want something more protective and trail-friendly, but still light and flexible enough for natural movement.

Open-Toe Barefoot Sandals for Kids
Open-toe barefoot sandals are best for older kids who want a light, airy summer feel and don’t need as much toe protection. Just watch the fit carefully: straps shouldn’t squeeze the toes, and the sole length needs to be just right so toes don’t hang over, but there isn’t so much extra space that kids trip.
Froddo

Froddo open-toe sandals are one of our favorite options for little girls when we want something a bit prettier or more dressed-up for summer. They come in lots of colors and have that sweet leather sandal look that works well for nicer outfits, family events, or everyday wear when you want something less sporty.
For rough playground use or kids who need more toe protection, we’d still choose Froddo’s closed-toe sandals instead.
Panta Sandals Pantakis

Panta are one of our favorite sport sandals for older kids, starting from size 32. The straps feel comfortable, they can get wet, and we love that when your child outgrows them, you can simply buy a new sole instead of replacing the whole sandal.
They are also easy to pass down to the next child, which makes them one of the more practical long-term options on this list.

Koel Abriana

Koel Abriana are basically a Birkenstock-style barefoot sandal in a kids’ version. I bought them for my daughter, and she loved the look, the feel, and how secure they stayed on her feet.
They are on the narrower side, so I’d only choose them for narrower feet.

Xero Shoes Z-Trail

Xero Shoes Z-Trail are sporty open-toe sandals for bigger kids, and they’re a good option if you want something light, flexible, and more adventure-ready than a dressy leather sandal. The straps need a bit of tweaking at first to get the adjustment right, but once fitted well, they feel secure enough for active summer days.
Fit: One of the rare open-toe barefoot sandals that worked for my extra-wide-footed son. They can also work for medium-width feet, but I’d pay extra attention to strap adjustment so the foot doesn’t slide around.
Zeazoo Ariel

Zeazoo Ariel are lovely open-toe leather sandals for little girls, especially if you want something a bit prettier and more dressed-up for summer. They have that simple, classic leather sandal look, though with a lot of wear, the leather got that “used” look a bit faster than on some other sandals we’ve tested.
Zeazoo also has a sportier-looking model called Olympe, but we haven’t personally tested the kids’ version yet.

Koel Ashley

Koel open-toe sandals are a similar dressier option to Froddo, especially if you’re looking for something cute for little girls. They have a cork upper and still feel soft and minimal, though the sole feels just a little firmer than Froddo’s.

Final Thoughts
The best barefoot sandals for kids are the ones that match your child’s feet, not just the ones that look cute online. A good pair should give the toes enough space, bend easily, stay secure on the foot, and suit the way your child actually moves.
Open-toe sandals are wonderful for freedom and hot summer days. Closed-toe sandals are better when kids need more protection. And as always, fit comes first.
If you’re not sure where to start, check your child’s foot width first and then choose a sandal based on shape, adjustability, and activity level.
