Be Lenka Nevada – Review

The autumn of 2021 is full of surprises at Be Lenka. New shape and design of the sole and full of impressive models, including the Nevada model – a barefoot leather boot, reminiscent of the famous Timberlands.

I remember the beginnings of the Be Lenka and their first model very well. The company was founded in 2017 and has experienced remarkable development in a very short time.

This year, we were pleasantly surprised by Be Lenka. They added a new sole shape to their original shape, which is more suitable for several different foot types. This new design is also used in the Nevada model from this review.

2. Material characteristics

2.1 Upper

The Nevada model will impress all who love chocolate and mustard tones. The shoes are made of thicker nubuck leather of excellent quality, which retains its shape nicely.

I chose a lighter mustard color, which may seem more sensitive at first glance, but so far I have easily cleaned all the stains (read: when you are trampled by muddy children’s shoes).

The laces in brown are of good quality, do not untie while walking and glide nicely through the eyelets, so untying the shoe is relatively easy.

The collar is a contrasting dark brown color and is more heavily padded. There is also a pull loop on the heel, which I do not use due to its small size. I also don’t miss it because the shoes are easy to put on even without it.

2.2 Lining

The shoes are completely lined with leather, so they are best suited for autumn and milder winter days. The insole is removable, so on colder days you can replace it with wool, which will give you more warmth.

2.3 Sole

Nevada shoes have a brand new sole that not only has a different shape, but is also a little more robust. It is made of 4 mm thick rubber, and to this thickness you need to add a deep profile, which will offer you excellent grip even on more slippery surfaces, and an insole.

The total thickness of the sole is therefore slightly larger, which is also noticable in ground feel, which is not so intense. I immediately felt a little ‘taller’ in them. In the winter, such a compromise is acceptable to me.

The sole can bend in the longitudinal direction, but due to the thicker leather and sole, a little more force is required. It is also flexible in the transverse direction, where greater flexibility of the sole is achieved with the help of longitudinal notches in the profile of the sole.

3. Sizing information

3.1 Length

Nevada are available in sizes 33-47 and are suitable for both men and women. They can also be worn by older children, as they are available from size 33 onwards.

The new Be Lenka models have a different sole shape, which also affected the size chart. The changes are small and for most sizes the shoes in the same size are about a millimeter longer than in the old models. Size 42 is e.g. 1 mm longer than size 42 in the old model.

My foot length is 26.3 cm and in the Nevada model I wear a size 42, which means 10mm of extra space for me. Due to the exceptional spaciousness, such a shoe length still suits me if I wear them with regular socks. For winter conditions, when I would like wear shoes with an extra insole and thick socks, I would prefer few mm more.

See post How much space do we need in shoes if you want to know more about that.

3.2. Toebox shape & width

Be Lenka shoes were known by a ‘bean’ shape of the sole and a stronger slope towards the little toes, which was changed in newer models.

The Nevada model and other new models have a milder slope towards the little toe now, making them more suitable for more foot types. The original ‘bean’ shape is now straighter, meaning they took away some width at the big toe and added it at the pinky toe. You can see a comparison with the Stellar model in the photo bellow.

Nevada will best fit foot types 2, 4, and 5, but other types can also fit in them relatively well.

More about different foot types you can read in the post What is my Foot Type?

The new shape is also suitable for wide feet and due to the larger amount of space above the toes, they feel even wider and more spacious than models made on the older shape. The shoes have a lot of space above the toes and in width, and they will also fit well to people whos feet are few mm wider than the value given in the size chart.

My feet are 10 cm wide and in size 42 I have a lot of space in width. I can spread my toes to the maximum.

3.3. Fit around the instep, heel and ankle

Nevada fits best on average wide ankles and heels. In the case of very narrow ankles and heels, I recommend using thicker socks or leg warmers to add some volume to the foot and to avoid heel slipping. They also fit well different heights of the instep, but feet with more volume can have a tighter fit in the middle of the foot.

4. Comfort

Nevada may seem a little more robust and stiff at first glance, but they will surprise you with their lightness. They are lighter than they seem.

At first, they will feel a little more compact than light summer barefoot shoes due to the thicker leather and sole, but they soften with use. The shoes never caused me any discomfort.

5. How and when to wear them?

Nevada are shoes that can be worn with casual clothing. They pair nicely with jeans in a straight or ‘slim’ cut and a T-shirt in neutral colors, which creates a balance with a more vibrant color and a more robust design of the shoe.

In doing so, please do not follow the fashion trends of untied or loosely tied shoes and tie your Nevada boot well. A well-attached shoe is the key for proper gait.

8. Shipping info

Be Lenka is one of my favorite barefoot brands for wide feet. Due to the new shape, the Nevada model is even more suitable for several different foot types, the shoes are wide and spacious, and there is also more space above the toes. The sole is a little thicker and more compact, but it is great for days when you need a good grip. As always, excellent quality and design from Be Lenka!
